Golfing is like running
Okay, now both the runners and the golfers are saying “Uh no!”. But the sameness is in the perfect shot or the perfect run, that keeps you coming back.
I am not a Capital ‘G’ Golfer, but I do golf. And there are entire rounds I play where I can’t hit the ball properly for love nor money.
But then, just as I am about to swear off golfing for the rest of my life, I hit the perfect shot. You know, the one where your body, the club, and the ball are all one. It feels right, it sounds right, it flies right and it lands right.
And all of a sudden, the rest of the crappy shots disappear from your memory, and you are lining up your next game.
The other night, I went out for a run. As per my training schedule, it was a simple two mile run.
A measly two miles!
But for love nor money, I could not get my lungs to expand, and nor my legs to move.
I kept on running and did my full two miles, but the whole time I was wondering why the heck I even bothered running. Was I some kind of masochist?
Two days later I went out for a five mile run. And based on my previous run, I promised myself that if I felt like crap after twenty minutes, I would stop and walk home.
Twenty minutes … thirty minutes … fifty minutes …sixty-five minutes later I was still running strong. I wasn’t even winded.
Almost six miles! And the only reason why I stopped was because I had done the loop and my house was right in front of me.
My next run is tonight, and I can’t wait!
That bad run?
What bad run?
It’s already a distant memory.

Half Marathon Training
Miles logged this week: 11
Miles logged to date: 18

I can remember runs like that — a long time ago. Congrats on being able to do it!
I hope to be able to do it again in the not too distant future. However, I’m not going to try running much until I’ve lost quite a bit more weight. I’ll stay on low impact machines for now. That’s what I did back in the early 90s and, when I finally got to a point where I was ready to start running, I was amazed at how easy it was to transition to it.

I’m using the elliptical trainer as well as the stairmaster and I generally walk on the indoor track. Monday was a great day and I struggled on Tuesday. Both days I did just over 2 hours, but Tuesday I just couldn’t quite get there.

I used to exercise for a couple of hours at least 5 times a week. But personal events in the last couple of years have really sapped my will to push myself to exercise. But I am beginning to start doing my Yoga again. Hopefully, soon I will not need to push myself to get up.
How I envy you the will power to push yourself to exercise and meet your goals. Credible indeed.
I hope you continue to achieve your goals.
No, I’m sorry golf is nothing like running. Golf is some sticks, some balls, holes, flags, sand, grass, other people waiting for you, scoring and a whole host of piddly little things to remember vis a vis positioning, swinging, follow-through, etc. Running is just running. Freely. No thinking. No Stress.

AT my age I find that though golf is not like running my running is an awful lot like golf. Real slow.

I don’t golf. I flog. Much more fun. I am lucky enough to have a boss that strongly encourages us to use the gym during work hours. I would be stupid not to use it! The result is, no one in my department is overweight (except for that pregnant chick….but she’ll loose it all in August). Although I work in a high stress and emotionally difficult environment, I haven’t seen anyone go on stress leave in the 4 years I’ve been there.

I saw a t-shirt once that said:
I hate golf!
I hate golf!
I hate - oooh nice shot!
I love golf!
Today was a I love running day - shaved 6.5 minutes of my 7km run (down to 39.5 min). 1.5 min more to shave off then increase my run to 11km and aim for 60 minutes.
Now for my other stats:
Alex’s Goal Weight 170 pounds
stat format is start/this week (total gain or loss)
Weight: 187 / 188 (+1)
Chest: 41 / 41.5 (+0.5)
Waist: 38.5 / 38.5 (0)
Hips: 38 / 38 (0)
Thigh: 21 / 22 (+1)
So I’ve gained chest and thigh mass (muscle) and that’s about it. You said something about it leveling off and going down, right UP?

I get what you are saying about golf. Never been there with running. It just sucks. There has to be some sort of game involved, like soccer, baseball, or tennis.

sanjay - I go through periods where exercise is low priority. Right now I happen to be highly motivated. I am glad to hear you are getting back into it.
XUP - I rarely golf on a public course because of the stress of other REAL GOLFERS coming up behind me. Fortunately, my parents’ have a golf course on their bed & breakfast property.
Bandobras - LOL, well golfing is certainly slow for me, but I’m a pretty fast runner.
Lion - and you come home all buff. Works for me!
Alex - could change that to: I hate running, I hate running, I hate — oooh runner’s high! I love running!40 minutes for a 7K is excellent. My average 5K time is 35 minutes. And yes, it takes awhile for things to kick in and inches melt away.
TurfDad - I am so not a team sport person. One of the reasons why I love running. It’s all about me, and me alone.

Everyone has good runs and bad runs, but if the good outweigh the bad, it’s great. I’m a race walker, and I definitely know the feeling.
As far as golf goes, I’ve never golfed, and don’t really have the desire to start. If family is any indication, when my mother golfs, she sometimes gets so frustrated, she throws a club. Nope, no golfing for me…………:)
